Horny Goat Weed, also known as Epimedium, Yin Yang Huo, Inyokaku, and Herba Epimedii, was discovered around 200 B.C. Later, it has been widely used and experimented for improving sexual behavior. Penile erection is caused by the engorgement of the penis, under normal conditions, sexual stimulation leads to the production and release of nitric oxide in the penis. Nitric oxide then activates the enzyme, guanylate cyclase, which causes the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). It is the cGMP that is primarily responsible for the erection.
Horny Goat Weed, the impotence medicine works by increasing nitric oxide levels, which relax smooth muscles of the penis i.e. corpus cavernosa.
